A Deep Dive into Bonsai Tools

Image
Hello All! This week I found a video by Peter Chan at the youtube channel Herons Bonsai. I like his videos because it really feels like a one on one even though it's on youtube and thousands of people are seeing it. The video in question is basically just peter going through all of the tools you could possibly use when working on Bonsai.  He went through a lot of tools so I'm only going to go through the main ones.  A link to the video can be found here . To start we have the basic garden pruners. These are a tool that basically anyone doing garden work has and I have been using over the last few years. they are generally good but don't allow you to get a close cut when taking off major branches. Root cutting shears area tool specifically for root pruning. This can be tough on the blades because of the soil that could be present when pruning the roots. Root pruning is almost as important as branch pruning when it comes to bonsai. Twig cutting shears or Satsuki shears are...

Getting Things Organized

Image
Hello everyone! This week I just wanted to get everything organized, getting a google slides set up for me to add the information that I've found, find a way to link my Instagram so that you can keep up with my plants, and embed some of the videos I watch this week relating to my topic.  The Google Slides  Here  is the link to the google slides. In those slides, I will slowly put together a set of slides that will contain all of my work and project progress. I will update it as I go so it can act as a way to view most of my blog content all in one place.  Instagram  Here  is a link to my Instagram. This is where I post all of my plant work when I think of it. I will be using this as I go more and more. You can follow if you'd like, it's not weird. :)   Video  There were a couple of videos that I wanted to link that I thought were quite interesting. Two from Nigel Saunders, who is described to be the Bob Ross of Bonsai. He's from waterlo...

My Genius Hour Intro

Hello everyone to my first post! There are a lot of different things that I am passionate about from physical activity, to fitness, to gardening/ taking care of different plants, and also a bit of reading. I think that having a lot of options for this project should help me get to a great idea but it is a bit overwhelming how open-ended this project is. I think the theme that I am considering the most is doing something related to plants and their growth. this can be measured pretty easily by taking photos and videos and making physical measurements of them. I think that this is a great start to a potential project idea. Here I've included a picture of one of the pups off of a plant my sister got me for Christmas a few years ago. This is from my Instagram, which might be a great spot to log the growth of the different plants I'll look at. Just an idea.        That's all for now, until next time, Luke Dunlop
