A look into Vietnam

Hey guys,

This week I took a look into Vietnam's bonsai presence. This topic was a bit harder to find information about online. Like a lot of other areas, it was carried over from China and Japan. They created their own version of the Japanese bonsai, these take a lot after the Chinese Penjing in the sense that they want to create a small landscape. This is called Hon Nam Bo.

Their trees look very similar because the branch selection and pruning techniques are the same as Japan’s and China’s. These trees are generally kept larger and are either in the ground or in very large pots. below is an example of one of those trees. you can see it's got the same pads that Japan's bonsai have but the scale of it is much larger and it located in a public place.

Bonsai is used as a symbol of good luck, that’s the reason that they have them placed all over. Inside, outside, on the streets, and on balconies. This art has such popularity that in some areas there has been environmental concern over over-harvesting a particular species of trees. There is also a very unique style of pots that come out of Vietnam, below is an example of one of them. Very large pot with pillars and details all over it. These are made out of different kinds of stones or concrete.

That's all the history research I did this week but I did want to show some updates on my trees.

Here is a willow cutting I've been working on, I want to focus on growing out the branches, and then once they are a good length I'll get them wired and work from there.

Another planting I want to show you guys is my jade forest. This is definitely my most developed Penjing. I did its first pruning a couple months ago and the new growth is coming in great. It's also got a few aerial roots growing, so if any of those take it'll be a great feature to the planting.
